Sometime during the Cold War and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, The Russian Military looked into replacing their longtime Service Marksman Rifle- The Mosin Nagant for something chambered in the same 7.62x54R round but Semi-Automatic. Thus Yevgeny Dragunov created this design based on the Famous AK47 platform.
